The original U47 FET was released in 1969 and gained massive popularity inside recording studios for its ability to handle fast transients and high SPLs. The high SPL handling, especially for a condenser mic, meant that engineers could make kick drums sound huge, and it meant that engineers no longer had to compromise between volume and detail with certain sources. Fun facts: The original U47FET was actually Neumann's second attempt to fix their supply chain issue impacting the U47 when the metal tubes in the U47 disappeared. Their first effort resulted in the U67 mic, using glass tubes in 1960. Nine years later, Neumann was able to use the same capsule (K47) and similar housing/circuit design but with a powerful FET instead of a tube. Thus, the U47FET was born.
